Solopreneur burnout: signs and fixes

Why solopreneurs burn out, the early warning signs, and practical fixes: boundaries, pricing, systems and when to get help.

The World Health Organization describes burnout as an occupational phenomenon resulting from chronic workplace stress that hasn't been successfully managed. When you are the whole business, there's no one to hand work to, so it builds quietly.

Early warning signs

  • Dreading work you used to enjoy.
  • Always "on": checking email late at night and on weekends.
  • Cynicism about clients, and slipping quality.

Common causes in solo businesses

  • Underpricing, which means too many hours for the income.
  • No boundaries on scope or availability.
  • Doing every task manually.

Fixes that work

  1. Raise your floor price (pricing guide) so you can work fewer hours.
  2. Set office hours and put them in your email signature and contracts.
  3. Automate or delegate one recurring task a month (workflows).
  4. Schedule time off before you need it, and price it into your rate.

If you're struggling, talk to a doctor or a mental health professional. In the US, you can call or text 988.
