Getting started

The one-person business

What a one-person business is, the business models that work solo, how they make money, and how to start one.

A one-person business has a single owner and no employees. It may still use contractors, software and automation, but one person makes the decisions and does or directs the work. In the U.S., the Census Bureau counts businesses without paid employees as nonemployer businesses.

Five models that work for one person

Productised serviceFixed scope, fixed priceHigher; repeatable"Logo in 5 days, $900"
Digital productsOne-off salesAudience sizeTemplates, courses

SoftwareSubscriptionsHigh, but support load growsMicro-SaaS

The usual progression

  1. Sell a service to learn what people pay for.
  2. Productise it with a fixed scope and price, a checklist and faster delivery.
  3. Add leverage with templates, a course or software built from what clients keep asking for.

Running it alone

One-person business vs startup

A startup aims to grow fast, usually with funding and a team. A one-person business aims for profit and autonomy. Both are valid, but they call for different decisions. See solopreneur vs entrepreneur.
